Lenten Series' Weekly Film: Harold & Maude

April 7th - Harold & Maude. "Suicide is painless, and it brings on many changes, and I can take or leave it if I please," Johnny Mandel sang as the theme song to MASH. This dark comedy is the story of a privileged young man, Harold, who tries to get his mother's attention by faking his own death in the most gruesome ways possible. Because any attention is good attention, right? Yeah, not so much.

Harold also, as a hobby, attends funerals. It is at a funeral he meets his match, Maude. She's a little, er, older than his mother, but has some life lessons to teach the young lad, before she, too, makes her way, on her own terms. This time.

This cult film has been a celebration of death and sex and Cat Stevens since 1971. Freudians, start your engines! Run time 1:31. Rated PG.
