Third Sunday of Advent

As we approach the third Sunday of Advent (Dec. 11) we remember the messages of two prophets.  First we heard from Isaiah who spoke to the people of Israel who were in exile.  He told them to keep hope alive, as God is  near.  Then we heard from John the Baptist who spoke to the crowds saying, turn back toward God, re-establish your relationship with the One who loves and sustains you for he is closer than you realize.

Now on this third Sunday we will be lighting the pink candle in our Advent Wreath.  It is the light of joy.  At times it is hard to have joy when the darkness of the season is long and the circumstances of life seem to hold us captive to sorrow and suffering.  But the promise that comes in the Advent season is that the darkness may linger for now, but the light of God will break through it.  The darkness cannot overcome the light, so don’t lose faith…stay hopeful for joy will come in the morning.  For that promise and hope in a God who loves us and offers us more grace than we can imagine,  there is great joy.  Let us take time today to name one thing for which we are grateful and one reason we know joy.

God’s peace be with you…and may you be surprised by joy!
